Steven Gilbert ranks as one of Albion’s fineststudent-athletes in the decade of the 1990s, starring in footballand track and field.

Steve garnered headlines for his performances in track andfield, winning NCAA Division III national championships in thejavelin in 1991 and 1993. He also finished third in the decathlonat the NCAA nationals in 1991 and 1993, and placed fourth in 1992.By virtue of these accomplishments, Steve was a five-timeAll-American.

On the league level in track and field, Steve was selected asthe MIAA’s most valuable performer in 1992 and 1993. Heplayed a major role in Albion’s MIAA team championship in1993, placing first in three events (discus, shot put, and triplejump) and finishing second in two others at the championshipmeet.

Steve collected four individual league titles in all.

On the gridiron, the Britons posted a 31-5-1 record and claimedfour MIAA titles during Steve’s career. After hauling in 13receptions for 221 yards and three touchdowns during the 1991regular season, Steve turned in one of the best games of his careerin Albion’s NCAA playoff game against Allegheny College withfive receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown.

Steve went on to claim first-team all-league status in 1992. Atight end, he finished as Albion’s second-leading receiver onthe year with 27 catches for 413 yards and six scores.

Steve started work as an English teacher in Quincy in 1993 andpassed away in November of that year.
