Julie overcame injury to achieve a career worthy of the Athletic Hall of Fame at Albion College.
She got off to a fast start, achieving all-MIAA first team status and helping Albion to a runner-up finish for the 2000 cross country season. Julie went on to finish 13th in the NCAA Regional Championship meet that season.
Julie came back to achieve all-MIAA awards on the track in 2003 and 2004. She had an impressive load at the MIAA Championships in 2004, finishing second in the 5,000 meters, third in the 10,000 and seventh in the steeplechase.
Looking back, Julie credits her coach for standing by her.
“Hayden Smith believed in me and coached me to accomplish more than I ever thought I was capable of,” Julie wrote in her personal statement.
Julie remains among the finest distance runners at Albion as she holds the fifth-fastest outdoor times in the 5,000 (18:05.34) and 10,000 (38.05.60) and she is sixth in the steeplechase (12:06.58).
Julie has remained active in athletics through running and attending her daughter’s soccer games. She enjoys sailing, as well.
